Port Colborne Quarries is a leading supplier of high-quality aggregate materials, serving Southern Ontario with a strong commitment to reliability, safety, and sustainable practices.

Port Colborne Quarries (PCQ), located at the southern end of the Welland Canal in Port Colborne, ON, has been a supplier of high-quality aggregates since the 1950s. Acquired by Rankin Construction Inc. in 2007, PCQ operates multiple pits and offers a comprehensive range of products, including road-building materials, manufactured sand, riprap, and armour stone. The quarry is strategically located with efficient access to the Niagara Region and key markets throughout the Great Lakes area, facilitated by highway access, St. Lawrence Seaway docking facility, and proximity to rail spurs for both Canadian National Railway and Canadian Pacific Railway.

The quarry is comprised of three (3) pits:

  • Pit #1

Pit #1, located along the west edge of the quarry site, is currently home to the quarry office and scale house, and the aggregate processing facility that supports the extraction activities from Pit #3, along with wash ponds associated with the processing equipment.

  • Pit #2

Pit #2 at PCQ has gradually transformed into a pond due to the accumulation of rainwater. As active extraction ceased and the natural landscape adjusted, the pit began to collect water, forming a sizable body that now occupies a significant portion of the excavation site. Without active drainage or pumping systems to remove excess water, precipitation and groundwater infiltration have contributed to the pond’s persistence.

  • Pit #3

Pit #3 at PCQ remains an active extraction site, supplying high-quality aggregates for construction and infrastructure projects throughout the region. The extraction process involves drilling and controlled blasting to break up the limestone, followed by the use of heavy machinery such as excavators, loaders, and haul trucks to transport the material to processing areas. Once extracted, the rock undergoes crushing, screening, and washing to produce various aggregate products, including gravel, sand, and road-building materials. Operations at Pit #3 are carefully managed to comply with environmental regulations and minimize dust, noise, and vibrations affecting nearby communities.

Following the acquisition of PCQ, Rankin Construction has made several improvements to the facilities including equipment and extraction techniques, ensuring in the consistent production of high-quality aggregates meeting OPSS and MTO standards for asphalt and concrete.

Other Activities

With extensive quarry lands, totally several-hundred acres, and direct access to the Welland Canal of the St. Lawrence Seaway, PCQ is an ideal hub for importing, storing and staging large/bulk goods for redistribution across Canada and the United States.
