Atlas RemediationRankin Construction Inc. specializes in heavy civil construction including roads, bridges, marine and infrastructure work. In Welland, the company has been active in many projects over the years but most recently, on the Atlas remediation project.

Rankin, a family-owned company established in 1978 in St. Catharines, retains strong ties to the Niagara region with a business philosophy that has led to its gradual expansion year after year. “Rankin is very concerned with being a good neighbour in business and that has evolved into a good reputation and progressively increasing business,” says project manager Craig Copping. “We also expand the scope of our work as appropriate and have added projects with wind and hydro electric energy to our project list.”

Work in the Niagara region has included three hydro generating stations and other projects along the Welland canal, and in 2011 Rankin began work on a $65 million MTO project to extend Highway 406 through to the City of Welland. The Atlas project is just one more connection to the city.

“The remediation project came out of a great co-ordinated effort by Walker Environmental to fix an environmental problem the city inherited,” says Copping. “The job that Walker and the City of Welland did to co-ordinate this project was exceptional and should be commended.”

For their part, Copping says Rankin worked as a subcontractor for C3 Environmental Ltd. who were contracted to build the leachate barrier wall. “The containment wall is 580 meters long and made of 4,600 sq. m. of steel sheet pile. We were responsible for installing the sheet pile and C3 took care of grouting the joints and the environmental controls.”

Copping says the work required several changes to the methodology and equipment selection to finally get the sheets down to the grade needed. “It was a challenging project but one we’re proud to be involved with. What Walker and the city have done is of such a great benefit for the community and that can’t be said enough.”
